A Statement of Aims
In 1973, shortly after the opening of Solent Middle School, the underlying philosophy was expressed in the following words:-
‘Our school was founded on the belief that all children are important and capable of many forms of development. Our aim is to help all develop an awareness of this individual importance and to realise their full potential. At the same time, children are the citizens of the future and during their schooling should become increasingly aware of the nature of society, and the roles they must play in it. They should become aware of their responsibilities to themselves, to other people and to our environment.’
Nothing that has happened since 1973 has invalidated that original statement. Our purpose remains to help pupils become:
- Capable, by acquiring a broad range of skills, knowledge and attitudes
- Confident, by learning to value themselves and trust in their own abilities
- Considerate and caring, by learning how to relate successfully to other people
- Independent, by learning how to make their own decisions based on reason rather than prejudice
